This option is not available if you download whatsapp from google play. To get this feature follow this steps.

1.Before going to next step,
go to Settings - Security tab - enable 'Download from Unknown Sources'

2. Go to the official website of whatsapp www.whatsapp.com/Android/   and download the apk file

3. Install the whatsapp application

4.  Open whatsapp and select Setting - Account - Privacy. You will see the 'online status' option there.
